I agree people don’t need to disclose where they bought something - a simple “I forgot where I bought this” and I’d be satisfied.
But a point you might not have considered is that for some (at least for me) are just trying to discover new brands and shops. I don’t necessarily want to buy the exact same item, especially if I work in the same office, but just looking for a similar vibe.
Yes, definitely. That’s actually one of the parts I love about sharing my wardrobe! Especially when it’s indie or small brands. It’s such a great way to support them and help their business grow.
I actually had a whole section in the article about this (which I now regret cutting!) – all about how sharing indie finds can be really positive, but how sharing fast fashion (even if it’s second-hand) might unintentionally encourage people to buy new.
I read fashion posts for ideas, not to look exactly like someone else, which appears to be what’s happening. Even fashion influencers are beginning to look identical.
Same here. I read style posts for ideas, not to copy someone’s outfits. But it does feel like everyone’s being nudged into dressing the same. Influencers all start to blur together. I’ve found TikTok way more inspiring lately.
the other aspect that I find weird is: sometimes people are just wearing old stuff and there is no link and there is no product name to search! I asked an influencer about her sunglasses once and she said "I actually bought them at a truck stop and there's no name on them" and I realized how much I loved that she found these great glasses that I didn't need to hunt down to appreciate

I wear a size 18 so even if I wanted to dress like everyone else i wouldn’t be able to find my size. 😜
Only read the title and subtitle so far but already a hard agree
I really hope you enjoy reading it!
Great post. Definitely agree with you… it’s a weird effect of social media, and I don’t really get it
Could not put my finger on why the term “gatekeeping” never quite sat right with me. This was it!
